Reactive Arthritis

It is the form of arthritis which is triggered as a response of an infection occurring in some other part of the body. Reactive arthritis can occur as a response to:

  • an inflammatory arthritis of large joints,
  • inflammation of the eyes (conjunctivitis )
  • urethritis
  • gastrointestinal infections

Reactive arthritis usually manifests about 1-3 weeks after an initial infection. Synovial fluid cultures are negative hence it can be inferred that reactive arthritis has either occurred due to over-excited autoimmune response or by bacterial antigens which have found their way to the joints.
