Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative or hypertrophic arthritis, is a very slowly developing disease of older years.
Osteoarthritis takes place as the cartilage gradually wears away toward the bone, new bone growth forms spurs and lips on the irritated bone. The aberration of the two bones due to the missing cartilage can be severely painful and give rise to swelling, stiffness and inactivity.
- Osteoarthritis usually occurs in persons over 50.
- Commonly affected areas are the fingers, lower spine, hip joints, and knees.
- Characteristic of osteoarthritis are the Heberden's nodes, which are small bony knobs appearing on the joints nearest the finger tips
